1. You’re next.

2. I didn’t know he/she was sick.

Great piece, Jared. A couple other things, though well intentioned, that I've often heard that can be unhelpful are:

"I know how you feel." No, you don't.

"Your (deceased loved one) would want you to be happy (wouldn't want you to be sad)." Okay, well, I am sad. Thanks for checking in.

YES! And how do you know what my deceased loved one would want?

You know how I feel? Numb and thirsting for a tumbler of vodka and ice?

To call my relationship with organized religion, and God complicated is under selling it. Dealing with a Catholic mass and everything that came with it for my mom was a pretty tremendous challenge for me. I heard a whole lot of platitudes that made me angry.
