Grief comes in many forms. I fear this is pre grief. I want to do something, anything. Some of us write, others read. Others escape with vacations or in some other way. While the world is burning, we still have to live.
I think this topic fits your goal for this column. It's about the possible death of democracy, certainly with the latest Supreme Court decision making trump a king. I am feeling all the dread you mention. It's so bad that I am having panic attacks and cannot listen to National Public Radio anymore. I don't watch the news, and this is coming from someone with a 30-year career in journalism, someone who was paid to read the wires and summarize it for consumption in a daily newspaper. I'm happy to know that I'm not alone. Please continue writing on this topic as the need arises. The need for me to read about it remains constant.
Clearly my throwaway edition on a vacation week resonated. I know what you mean, though. I used to lay in bed and listen to Morning Edition for a bit before getting up, and ATC while cooking. Now? Just the top of the hour news to stay informed. I still support NPR financially because it’s an important service but I don’t digest it as I once did. Of course, I don’t digest anything anymore as I once did.
Thanks for articulating everything that’s been on my brain. It feels cowardly to tap out for a bit, but there’s also such a raw feeling of helplessness about so many things going on in the world that it’s hard to know what to do or where to start. Hope you have a really restful and fun vacation with the gang.

Yeah. I think you’re right. I watched the BBC last night to see the parliamentary returns. It was so organized and dignified…false hope for November.
