Today is Mother’s Day. Not unlike a religious holiday, I’ll offer you “Happy Mother’s Day if you celebrate it” type of greeting. This morning, after I get back from grocery shopping, I’ll make brunch for the grandmothers and my wife as tribute, but otherwise I find this holiday — and Father’s Day — to be perfunctory and meaningless.
I could write an essay as to why, but instead I am going to highly recommend two pieces that codify the Mother’s Day experience for me, both as a child of a mother, and as the husband to a mother.
So, Happy Mother’s Day to those who celebrate. And, if you don’t, go get some soft-serve and know that you’re not out there alone.
